    Hi Monkeyone,

We're sorry that you feel this way, however our prices are very competitive.

    Why?

    1) We use real mo-cap data that we clean and loop ourselves, so the animator doesn't have to.

    2) Motions are automatically retargeted directly onto any characters (including characters you upload yourself).

Two great reasons why we're very price-concious for the product that we provide :)

Monkeyone, thanks for sharing your concern about our prices -- we do feel like our prices are very competitive in the industry if you look at the quality of our motion data and premium services we offer.

The cost per second per motion that we offer is much less expensive than a traditional motion capture studio (at similar quality levels)... It's also *much* less time-intensive than using stock motion data. Most stock motions that you get for cheap or free require that you clean up the data, loop it, and then retarget it to your characters, all manually. We do all of this for you, so that's where our pricing comes in...

In addition, you get real-time customization capabilities using our sliders, which you don't get when you use stock motions...

    I hope this helps,

I also think your pricing is quite fair... with one exception. I think re-downloading tweaks of already-purchased animations should be free rather than discounted. It's hard to commit to one permutation of an animation online before getting it in engine (for us game developers).

    Hajasal_sk,

Thanks for your input on this - I do see your point about getting animations right without previewing in your game engine. We are looking at ways to allow people to retweak/redownload without paying extra over the next few weeks, so your feedback is very timely.

Thanks and feel free to ping me with any additional questions or feedback anytime!

    Hajasal_sk,

Thanks for following up with me - There haven't been any deployments that address your feedback above, but we are actively working on a solution that, once it's designed/spec'd, should not take too long to push live on the site.

In the meantime, contact me directly at jon (at) mixamo (dot) com if you want to discuss mitigations in the short term based on animations you've already purchased with us - I'm happy to help..

    thanks,

Yes the customer should be able to re-edit the same motion once they have purchased it. It could even be only for a set time limit say a few weeks or something. The editing feature is very cool but it is ruined by the one time only rule, even at the discount price.

This kind of answers a question I had vis-a-vis what you get for your money w.r.t. motions. So basically when you "buy" an animation you're buying one specific instance of it rather than the ongoing right to customize and use it. This makes your prices a lot less attractive than they appear on the surface.

I think that allowing a user to retweak and download an animation once purchased would be the right way to go. If it had to be within a certain time limit then that would be better than nothing.

    Ah, this answers my question.

I think the prices are great (although the amount of animations is a bit low; no mining, tree chopping, foraging, more two handed weaponry, etc.)

But this will always keep me from purchasing from Mixamo: having to repurchase the same animation.

I would definitely purchase a ton of animations from Mixamo if...when I purchase an animation, I "own" it, meaning I can tweak or redownload it at any time, forever. I don't see any reason why not, as I may not even download it more than once, but still, knowing I can retarget it to a different model is the biggest seller (the retargetting system alone is worth the price).

But if I have to repurchase the same animation I've already bought, the product is just not good enough. Might as well spend the money on other retargetting software and other animations, and pay someone to do any extra tweaking that might need to be done (or do it myself).

I really like Mixamo, and although it's a bit pricey, I've learned after spending hundreds of dollars that Mixamo is actually one of the best deals, by far, not only in price but also in quality. Sure, you can get massive animation packages containing hundreds of animations for the same price as less than 50 Mixamo animations, but you have to retarget, tweak, and loop every single one. It's a PITA, and Mixamo doing all the work for you is AMAZING! Absolutely worth the money, saving DAYS of work.

So mixamo is actually a great deal...but only if you "own" the animation once you buy it the first time. Paying for alterations, tweaks, or retargetting is just silly, unless the retargetting is amazing enough to transfer from DAZ's M4 to say... the Predatron Goblin...or... DAZ Troll, and still look amazing. And even then... I'm not sure if I'd go for it without unlimited redownload/tweaks/retargets of the animations I bought. I probably wouldn't.

So this is one customer lost because (and ONLY because) of that fact.
    • Well, I must say I am really impressed about this change. I stated before that this was the ONLY reason I was lost as a customer, and now I find out that you can retweak for free and redownload as many times as you want...

I also stated I would be willing to pay for big retarget changes (like from a human to a giant troll) so although I think the animation should apply to multiple models (perhaps a limited number of additional models OR a cheaper rebuy of that same animation on a different model) I will return as a customer.

The moment I get a 20% off coupon or some other deal to ease my worries, I will be trying it out! If I like it, I will most likely stay for quite awhile.

So does this mean that if I purchase an animation through the Unity Asset store (for example) and apply it to 1 character, I have to buy it again to apply it to a second character?
That makes this service progressively less attractive.

I was really disappointed to find I could not tweak the purchased animations after I'd signed up for an subscription. Initially, before purchasing a subscription, I downloaded one of the free animations as a test, then downloaded it again after tweaking, and no additional cost was required for the second download. I felt confident that once I purchased the subscription I would have that same flexibility on my own purchased animations. I was quite surprised that I could not download a second instance without being required to give up one of my subscription credits. This seems really ridiculous and probably not what most folks expect. I think if you are not going to change this, it should be clearly documented up front. Right now it's misleading. However I hope you will change this policy soon and allow, as has been suggested above, unlimited tweaking, or at least time limit tweaking of purchased animations.

Rig the model yourself and then upload it to the site. It's free to use after it's uploaded. Just because you don't want to pay for option A doesn't mean the site sucks, you just need to look at option B and C, etc.

I really like Mixamo. Although I do have to tweak the animations a bit afterwards, the time invested is far less than what I had before, and the animations are far superior than anything I could come up with.

Plus, the models don't deform as much :)

why would i want to upload it then rig it?
isn't this program suppose to let me rig it on the fly once uploaded.
another thing its not free, my first model i uploaded i could download free but anyone after that they wanted to charge me to download it.
But when i uploaded it the uploaded optimized my mesh so Bad it looked deformed and that wont do me any good to download it when its messed up

    • ***THE MORE YOU KNOW***

The Daz auto-rigger is for the GENESIS figure, for GENESIS morphs.

Meaning if you take the GENESIS figure and alter that single figure, the rigg will follow it.

DAZ's "auto-rigger" doesn't do anything for any other figure, that I know of. The youtube video linked proves this is exactly for the Genesis figure, and shows nothing more.

Mixamo's Auto-Rigger is for ANY figure, even your custom created ones, or bought ones from other websites.

I think the prices are fine and Mixamo is totally worth it, and I'm joyously happy that such a kit is available to me at such a price. However I was told that the auto-rigging is 4 credits, which actually makes it more expensive with the pro-pack than without. That might be an oversight or something.

    @Draac

    I just rigged it myself.

Charging a computer by the hour is stupid. It took me about four hours and at $30, that's right at minimum wage (at least in the States). Is that a win or not? I think so. If I had a slightly larger budget I'd have gone for it.

Anyone who is arguing that Mixamo's rigging prices are too high, obviously hasn't looked into hiring a professional to rig a model for them.

Compared to a real professional (who can produce the same quality) Mixamo is dirt cheap.

I am skeptical who the person complaining "rigging isn't free!" really is, and what their age is. Especially considering their lack of proper spelling/grammar, I assume this is a child, as many teenagers messing around with game development demand everything should be free.

Any adult who knows the business wouldn't be complaining about the cost of rigging a model. It is not easy for most models, it is very time consuming, and hiring a real professional can cost A LOT of money. Professionals in 3D animation don't work for minimum wage, they work for much, much more. Mixamo's auto-rigger does the same work, the same quality, in seconds, and is on-par with competitive prices.

Mixamo DOES have competition. Every freelancer or company who works with 3D modeling & animation. Mixamo's prices are dirt cheap compared to theirs.

    • Correction*** depending on the model and professional, rigging may cost significantly more than what Mixamo charges. Meaning that a single rigging can cost hundreds of dollars down to the same price Mixamo charges. If you really think you can find someone charging less than Mixamo for rigging, then please be warned about their possible quality or the fact you might be paying them slave labor wages. Rigging isn't a quick and easy process.
    • This is assuming rigging at Mixamo costs $60-$90. If it is cheaper, than you will not find a cheaper way to rigg than Mixamo.

I purposefully went with Mixamo (after denying them originally for their "high prices") because I was shocked at how expensive animations, rigging, and modeling really costs. The professionals (ranging from newbie animator to Pixar expert) were extremely cheap considering their skills ($22-$55 an hour) but the work itself takes many hours, resulting in rigging which would cost upwards of $60-$160, and animations which would cost about the same.

With my subscription plan, my animations cost about $7-$14 each. Animations that would cost me over a hundred dollars EACH. If it is true that rigging at Mixamo only costs 4 credits, then that makes Mixamo 50% cheaper than even the cheapest rigger I found. (A fresh out of college student was willing to do it for $60, the cheapest I found).
