I don't think the desktop version automatically exclude the online service. Vector Magic started just like Mixamo (
www.vectormagic.com) but it was free for a while then paid per upload/vector convertion.. after some time they released a desktop version but kept the online service.
Mixamo could keep the online version more updated and the desktop have paid updates every year or so. The downside is that the rigging online service would need to be reduced to "compete" with the desktop version. If it is priced at $600 range, 7 riggin on online service would pay for it.
But, as you said, one of the goals is to keep close touch with customers needs to improve the service.. and obviously maximize the monetization of the product. The desktop version is just an idea to broaden the monetization that affects nothing the animation product mixamo offers and custom solutions to users.
